Our Reverse Road to Hāna tour pairs Maui’s coastal scenery with stories worth lingering over. The full route normally fills about 10–12 hours, including selected stops and breaks. Because the backside crossing comes early in this direction, settle that part of your plan first.
Maui County’s Kalepa notice lists Hana Highway between mile markers 38 and 39 closed to through traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday–Friday except holidays. Only emergency vehicles may pass during work hours. Public access is listed outside those hours, but the notice’s project dates are inconsistent. Confirm the crossing schedule for your travel date directly with the county before choosing this route.
Open the Kalepa project notice and Maui road updates while planning and again before leaving. Respect closures, and give your island adventure a well-planned start!

Please pay attention to all parking signs. Parking illegally on the Road to Hana can not only result in a ticket, but it is also extremely disrespectful to people who need to use this road every day.
The traffic on the road greatly impacts their lives, so you can help do your part by parking legally and adhering to all signs.
We’ll advise you on where to park during the tour, and if there are no spots available, just wait for a spot to open up.

Yes! Feel free to join the tour along the route. Just make sure that you follow the numbers in chronological order from where you are starting from. If you don’t begin at one of the tour starting points you’ll miss a few stories, but you’ll still have a great experience.

From the start of the tour in Kula, it takes about three hours to get to Hana, depending on the stops you make and how long you stay at each spot.

8. What if I am spending the night in Hana?
Great! This means you can really take your time and break the tour up into two days. Just switch the tour off when you arrive in Hana, and turn it back on when you’re ready to get on the road the next day.
9. Is it safe to drive the Road to Hana at night?
We don’t recommend driving the backside of Hana after dark. Portions of this route are remote, narrow, and can be difficult to navigate, especially in poor weather or low visibility.
Start the tour early so you can complete the backside portion during daylight hours. Always check current road conditions and closures before starting your tour.
