Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Tour
Aloha Shaka Guiders,
If you’ve been following the news about Kīlauea, you may have seen reports of recent volcanic activity inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Here in Hawaiʻi, that’s actually part of what makes this place so extraordinary.
Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, and seeing it in action is something very few places in the world can offer. Volcanic activity is part of the natural rhythm of the island—and when it happens, it reminds us that Hawaiʻi is still being shaped right before our eyes.
The national park remains open, and there is still so much to explore—from massive craters and lava fields to scenic overlooks, rainforest trails, and incredible geological stories. In fact, many visitors find that knowing the volcano is active makes the experience even more powerful.
Like any living landscape, conditions can change from time to time. Park officials monitor activity closely and may temporarily adjust access to certain areas to keep visitors safe. Our Shaka Guide tour is designed to help you make the most of your visit no matter what the volcano is doing that day.
As you explore, we recommend checking the official National Park Service updates and stopping by the Visitor Center (which our tour brings you to). Rangers there always have the latest information and can point you toward the best spots to visit during your trip.
Our writers and producers visit the park themselves to create these tours, and we built this experience so you can explore with confidence, learn the stories behind the landscape, and witness one of the most remarkable places on Earth.
Mahalo for choosing Shaka Guide. We’re honored to be part of your adventure through Hawaiʻi’s volcanic heart.
With aloha from Hawaiʻi,
Amy from Shaka Guide 🌋

Waimea And Na Pali Driving Tour
Aloha Shaka Guiders,
I wanted to share a quick note about Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks as you plan your drive.
I’ve been keeping an eye on the ongoing road work projects in the Waimea Canyon area. Because conditions can change, I highly recommend checking all the links we’ve provided as you plan your visit and again closer to your drive day.
For the most part, Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks should still be open and visitable, but you should expect delays and limited parking, especially during peak hours. This is pretty typical during periods of road work here in Hawaiʻi, and it’s nothing to worry about—just something to plan around.
My biggest tip? Go early if you can. Earlier mornings usually mean lighter traffic, easier parking, and cooler weather. A little extra planning goes a long way here.
Mahalo for traveling with Shaka Guide and for taking the time to explore Kauaʻi thoughtfully. Waimea Canyon holds a special place in my heart, and I hope you enjoy every overlook, breeze, and moment along the drive.
With aloha,
Amy from Shaka Guide 🌈
P.S. Pāʻulaʻula aka Russion Fort Elizabeth is temporarily closed "until further notice" due to construction. So if this stop is a bucket list location for you, check the DLNR Kauai (link above) website to see the status.

West Maui Coastline Tour
‘Iao Valley State Monument: Will be CLOSED until June 26, 2026 for safety improvements.
Aloha Shaka Guiders,
I wanted to personally share a note about our West Maui tour, because it’s one of our most talked-about drives—and we want you to know exactly what to expect.
First, a little context. 6 of us recently went back to Maui as a team to retest this tour again in real life, with a mix of personalities and comfort levels, so we could experience it the same way you would. Here's the verdict:
Andrew drove and felt it was totally manageable—his advice: take it slow and steady when you need to, and you’ll be fine. I rode in the back seat and felt comfortable the whole way. Rita, who gets motion sickness easily, did great in the passenger seat. Rayne absolutely loved it (to the point of sticking his head out the window to look over the cliffs—classic daredevil). Shanuj, who’s used to driving along mountainous cliff roads in India, thought it was easy peasy. Jen, who has a fear of heights, didn’t enjoy the narrow section and strongly recommends that anyone with a similar fear turn around when the tour suggests doing so—and yes, our audio guide clearly tells you exactly when and where that option is.
The road itself is fully paved, but there is one section where the road narrows to a single lane with no guardrails. If two cars meet, one driver may need to carefully back up or slowly squeeze by. That’s the part some people love—and some people don’t.
We’re sharing all of this because we want you to feel informed, not pressured. Turning around is always okay. And the good news is that even if you decide to turn around at the recommended point, the drive up to that point is still incredibly beautiful—full of ocean views, lush scenery, and the kind of moments that make West Maui special. It’s absolutely worth your time, no matter how far you go.
Mahalo for trusting Shaka Guide and for letting us be part of your Maui adventure. Whether you go all the way or decide to turn around, we hope your West Maui drive feels scenic, memorable, and done entirely on your own terms.
With aloha,
Amy from Shaka Guide
