Aloha Shaka Guiders!
Kohala’s green hills, Hawi and Waimea town stops, and Hawaiian history make a lovely half-day adventure. Outside October 10, allow about 3–5 hours for the drive, selected open stops and a food break.
Lapakahi State Historical Park remains closed after fallen-tree damage. Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site will also close all day October 10 for Ironman, and race-related road restrictions may interrupt your route that day. If you’d like to enjoy more of Kohala’s historic stops without the race-day closures, I recommend planning your tour for another date.
Check Puʻukoholā’s visitor alerts, Lapakahi and state park notices and Ironman’s road information while planning and again before leaving. With your stops settled, take the day at island pace!

The Kohala Coast Backcountry Tour only takes about 3-5 hours, depending on how long you spend at each stop. Remember, this tour only drives around the northern tip of the island and starts and finishes in Waikoloa.

There are no required entrance fees for the main parks on this tour. Budget extra for gas, meals, snacks, souvenirs, and optional purchases. Some small shops may be cash-only, so bringing a little cash can be helpful.
5. Can I join the Kohala Coast Backcountry Tour en route?
Yes! Feel free to join the tour along the route. Just make sure that you follow the numbers in chronological order from where you are starting from. If you don’t begin at one of the tour starting points you’ll miss a few stories, but you’ll still have a great experience.
6. Can I take the Kohala Coast Backcountry Tour in the opposite direction?
No, this tour can only be done in one direction.
