The Road to Monument Valley is like being dropped into your favorite Western film. The dusty roads hug the San Juan River, breaking out into views of otherworldly red-sandstone monoliths. Along the way, visitors can explore some of the most stunning state parks, monuments, and scenic drives, all while learning about the local geology, local culture, and film history.
Here are just a few of the fun things you can do on the tour!
• Drive the steep, winding Moki Dugway for thrilling switchbacks and breathtaking views of the surrounding desert and canyonlands.
• Marvel at the dramatic, winding curves of the San Juan River from Goosenecks State Park, showcasing one of the best examples of entrenched river meanders.
• Explore the stunning red rock formations and sweeping desert landscapes of the Valley of the Gods.
• Admire the unique Mexican Hat Rock, a large, balanced rock formation resembling a sombrero, set against a backdrop of desert beauty.

What you spend depends on the activities you do, but here’s a list of entry fees for the tour:
- Gooseneck State Park
- $5 per car
- $2 per person, commercial tour bus or tour group
- $10 per night for camping
- Monument Valley: $8 per person
- Day Hike Fees: $5 per person
- Cash for roadside souvenirs
- Kane Gulch Ranger Station: open in the
- Spring (March 1 – June 15) from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every day
- Fall (Sept. 1 – Oct. 31) from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every day
- Summer and Winter: call Monticello Field Office
- Navajo Welcome Center: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Monument Valley Park: typically 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Monument Valley Scenic Drives:
- Winter: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Summer: 7:00 am - 7:00 pm
Yes! The tour has three starting points: Bears Ears National Monument, Utah; Bluff, Utah; Kayenta, Arizona. Just make sure that you follow the numbers in chronological order from where you are starting.
If you don’t begin at one of the tour starting points you’ll miss a few stories, but you’ll still have a great experience.
Yes! The tour goes north to south, starting at either Bears Ears or Bluff, and south to north, starting at Kayenta.
