Overview: Choosing the Right Airport for Joshua Tree
Why airport choice matters
Joshua Tree National Park sits about 130 miles west of Los Angeles, making it an easy national park to check out when you’re in the LA area. And with Southern California’s many airports, it’s easy to catch a flight.
But what’s the best airport to use for Joshua Tree? This is important because the wrong airport might add hours to your trip.
Key factors: distance, cost, flight options
While there are several airport options in Southern California, you’ll want to factor in their distance from Joshua Tree, the costs associated with a bigger versus smaller airport, and the variety of flight options available.
Here’s the rundown of airports closest to Joshua Tree National Park, starting with the closest. Since there are multiple entrances to the national park, we’ll use the park’s west entrance as the end point, since it’s the closest to nearly every airport.
1. Palm Springs International Airport (PSP): Closest Option
Distance & drive time details
Palm Springs International Airport is by far the closest option, only 43 miles away from the West entrance gate, and about a 1-hour drive. It’s also by far the smallest option.
Flight Options
All the major American airlines, as well as some Canadian ones, fly to Palm Springs, though many of the flights are on a seasonal basis. And, most of the flights are coming from major hubs, so you may not be able to score a direct flight.
Rental car & ground transport logistics
All the major car rental companies operate at Palm Springs International Airport, making it easy to rent a car.
The Basin Transit Authority provides public bus service to gateway towns outside of Joshua Tree National Park, such as the cities of Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and 29 Palms, but not to the park itself. To enter the park, you need a car.
Pros & cons summary
Palm Springs International Airport is the most conveniently located airport to Joshua Tree, with easy car rental options and only an hour’s drive to the closest entrance. And because Palm Springs is located far from the LA area, you won’t be affected by potential LA traffic.
However, because it’s a smaller airport that primarily connects to major hubs, airfare may cost more, and you may require a layover.
2. Ontario International Airport (ONT): Second closest
Wikipedia
Distance & drive time details
Ontario International Airport, located between the cities of Ontario and San Bernardino in the Inland Empire area east of Los Angeles, is the next closest major airport.
The distance to the West entrance to Joshua Tree is about 93 miles, and about an hour and 45-minute drive, depending on traffic.
Flight Options
All the major American airlines fly to Ontario, though most fly from major hubs. Southwest operates a few non-hub routes, as does Frontier Airlines.
A handful of international airlines from Asia and Mexico fly into Ontario as a less-busy alternative to the major hub at LAX.
Rental car & ground transport logistics
All the major car rental companies operate at Ontario International Airport, making it easy to rent a car.
Pros & cons summary
Ontario International Airport puts you closer to Joshua Tree than most other major airports, with the exception of Palm Springs International Airport.
While you may encounter some traffic, flying into Ontario allows you to avoid most of the LA area’s traffic.
Flights are somewhat limited, so airfare may cost more and require a layover.
3. John Wayne Airport (SNA): For Orange County Travelers
Wikipedia
Distance & drive time details
Moving farther afield, John Wayne Airport is located about 120 miles southwest of Joshua Tree National Park, close to the Pacific Ocean, and about a 2.5-hour drive away.
This is the main airport for Orange County, and the closest to Anaheim’s major attractions like Disneyland.
So if you’re pairing your Joshua Tree experience with Anaheim’s theme parks, John Wayne Airport could be a convenient choice.
However, with the distance from Joshua Tree, there’s a greater chance of running into LA traffic.
Flight Options
All the major airlines fly to John Wayne, as well as low-cost carriers like Allegiant, Breeze, and Frontier.
Rental car & ground transport logistics
All the major car rental companies operate at Ontario International Airport, making it easy to rent a car.
Local buses connect the airport to locations in Orange County and aren’t really helpful for getting to Joshua Tree.
Pros & cons summary
John Wayne Airport could be a convenient choice if you’re doing more in the area than just Joshua Tree, especially Anaheim’s theme parks like Disneyland. However, the airport is in the thick of the LA metro, so there’s a longer drive to Joshua Tree, and a greater likelihood of running into traffic.
4. Hollywood Burbank (BUR): For Northern Los Angeles
Distance & drive time details
Another Los Angeles option is Hollywood Burbank, located about 145 miles and 2 hours and 45 minutes away.
Burbank could be convenient if you’re also planning to go to Universal Studios, Hollywood, or other destinations north of LA. However, as it’s in the thick of the LA area, you will likely encounter heavy traffic.
Flight Options
All the major airlines fly to Burbank, though with somewhat limited options. Most of Burbank’s direct flights come from other western US destinations, with some exceptions. Southwest flies from many locations.
Rental car & ground transport logistics
All the major car rental companies operate at Ontario International Airport, making it easy to rent a car. Local transportation options are unhelpful to reach Joshua Tree.
Pros & cons summary
Much like the John Wayne Airport, Burbank could be a helpful airport if you’re doing some further exploration in the LA area, and looking to avoid the larger hubs. However, the distance from Joshua Tree means a lengthy drive, which may include heavy traffic.
5. Larger International Hubs (LAX, SAN, LAS)
a. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

LAX is the main airport for Los Angeles with by far the most connections. It’s nearly 150 miles from Joshua Tree’s west entrance, and likely a 3+ hour drive
b. San Diego International Airport (SAN)
Wikipedia
San Diego International Airport is about 170 miles from the west entrance to Joshua Tree, and about a 3-hour drive.
c. Harry Reid/Las Vegas International Airport (LAS)
Alternatively, if you want to avoid the LA area altogether, you could fly from Las Vegas. The north entrance is the closest, and is about 180 miles and 3 to 3.5 hours from the airport.
Depending on which way you go, be prepared to drive some lonely roads through the Mojave Desert.
Summary comparison of big-hub trade-offs
The major hubs at LAX, San Diego, and Las Vegas provide far more direct flight options, but the trade-off is a longer drive.
Quick Comparison Table: Airport Distances, Drive Times & Highlights
| Airport | Distance | Drive Time | Highlights |

Convenient for northern LA attractions (e.g., Universal Studios), smaller airport, but traffic-heavy route |
| ✈️ Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) | ~150 miles | 3+ hours |
Largest airport with the most flight options and international connections, but the longest and most traffic-prone drive |
| ✈️ San Diego International Airport (SAN) | ~170 miles | ~3 hours |
Major airport with good flight availability, longer drive but less LA congestion depending on route |
| ✈️ Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) – Las Vegas | ~180 miles (to North Entrance) | ~3 to 3.5 hours |
Avoids LA traffic completely, scenic desert drive, good flight availability from many cities |
How to Decide: Matching Airport to Your Trip Priorities
- If you care more about time versus cost, Palm Springs International Airport or Ontario International Airport is closest to the park and probably your best choice, provided you find a flight that works for your timeline.
- If you’re exploring more of Los Angeles, then John Wayne, Burbank, or even LAX could be more affordable and convenient choices.
- If you’re planning a trip that’s off-season, then the bigger hubs may provide the most affordable options since Palm Springs has many seasonal flights.
