What Started as a Hobby: Moir Gardens' History

Shaka Guide

Listen to audio sample:

Looking for the next best place to visit as you explore Poipu? Then stop by the Moir (moy-er) Gardens. This is a nice little tropical garden with a wonderful variety of plants. Admission is free! Go check it out.

Let me tell you a little about the Moir Gardens. This entire area used to be the estate of a sugarcane plantation manager. At its heyday, Hawaii was a top exporter of sugar in the world. Sugar was big business. So the plantation manager was, of course, the big shot in town. Lavish parties were frequently thrown here. Since then, the home itself has been turned into an award-winning restaurant.

The gardens started as a hobby of the manager’s wife. But it kept getting bigger and more elaborate. Today, you can find cascading pools, koi ponds, rare cacti, bromeliads, orchids and many other plant species. It’s quite a quaint little place to walk around!
