We’re so proud to announce that in 2021 we donated $10,000 to local nonprofits here in Hawaiʻi. And, we couldn’t have done it without you - our customers. A portion of your purchase was donated to support these nonprofits that are doing vital work in the community. 

We want to thank you for choosing Shaka Guide - we know you have a lot of options for things to do during your Hawaiʻi vacation. We’d also like to thank these nonprofits for the work that they do everyday. 

Here is a complete list of nonprofits we donated to in 2021 and the amounts. We encourage you to take a look, and if you’re so inclined, make an additional donation to these amazing organizations. 

Kauai 

Hui o Laka and Kōkeʻe History Museum

• Donation: $500 
• What to they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education
• Mission: Hui o Laka is a nonprofit that operates Kōkeʻe Museum as a visitor center for Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks. The vision of Hui o Laka is to connect people with the spirit of Kōkeʻe. The organization and its members illuminate, celebrate, and nurture the essence of Kōkeʻe, engaging all in a spirit of appreciation and service.

Kaua`i Historical Society

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education 
• Mission: Kaua`i Historical Society's mission is to collect, preserve, and disseminate the oral, written and pictorial history of Kaua`i County and to educate the public about the history and cultures of Kaua`i and Niihau.

West Kaua`i Heritage Center

• Donation: $500
• What do they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education
• Mission: The West Kaua`i Heritage Center located in Waimea is dedicated to telling the story of West Kaua`i and to celebrate its diversity by providing a glimpse of its culture, history and people. The center features a collection of historic photographs, exhibits and multiple projects intended to encourage dialogue and cultivate an interest in learning more about West Kaua`i's history.

Big Island

Friends of Volcanoes National Park

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Park sustainability and cultural preservation 
• Mission: Friends of Haleakala National Park is dedicated to the protection, preservation and interpretation of the natural and cultural resources at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park for the enjoyment of current and future generations. 

Kona Historical Society

• Donation: $500
• What do they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education
• Mission: The Kona Historical Society was founded in 1976 to collect, preserve and share the history of the Kona district and their rich cultural heritage within Hawai’i. The Society provides living history programs, digital education programs, field trips, virtual experiences, and exhibits at its historic sites - the H.N. Greenwell Store Museum in Kealakekua and the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook among other initiatives.  

Oahu

Friends of Iolani Palace

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education
• Mission: It is the mission of the Friends of Iolani Palace to preserve, restore, and protect Iolani Palace for local residents and people from around the world. By sharing, it perpetuates the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom through this living restoration. 

The Friends of Hanauma Bay

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Bay sustainability, marine life education and cultural preservation 
• Mission: The Friends of Hanauma Bay is dedicated to the conservation of coastal and marine environments, emphasizing stewardship of the natural resources of Hanauma Bay.

Maui

Hana Cultural Center and Museum

• Donation: $1,000
• What do they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education
• Mission: Established by kupuna (wise elders) to perpetuate the traditional way of life of Hana and to honor the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance, Hana Cultural Center & Museum houses ancient artifacts including Hawaiian quilt, poi boards, stone implements, Polynesian kapa, fish nets and hooks. Visiting the Hāna Cultural Center takes you even further into Hawaiʻi’s storied past.

Friends of Haleakala National Park

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Park sustainability and cultural preservation 
• Mission: The mission of the Friends of Haleakala National Park is to assist the park and the National Park Service to achieve the purposes and goals for which they were established: to preserve Haleakala's unique ecosystems, scenic character, and associated Native Hawaiian cultural and spiritual resources. 

Maui Historical Society 

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Historical and cultural preservation and education
• Mission: Maui Historical Society is committed to preserving and sharing Maui’s History with the local community and those abroad. It hosts cultural events throughout the year and works with individuals and organizations to create special exhibitions for all to enjoy.

Maui Invasive Species Committee

• Donation: $500
• What do they do: Invasive species prevention and control
• Mission: The Maui Invasive Species Committee is a project of the University of Hawai’i Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. The committee works to prevent, control, or eliminate the most threatening invasive plant and animal species to protect Maui’s watersheds, ecological resources, agriculture, and community.

Hawaiʻi, Statewide

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi

• Donation: $1,000
• What do they do: Beach cleanups 
• Mission: Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi’s mission is to inspire local communities to care for their coastlines through fun, hands-on beach cleanups. It also coordinates educational programs, team building corporate cleanups, waste diversion services, public awareness campaigns and helps others organize their own beach cleanups.

Hawaiʻi Foodbank

• Donation: $1,000 
• What do they do: Protect against food insecurity
• Mission: Hawaiʻi Foodbank is doing vital work to support the state. Their mission is to make sure no family goes hungry. The nonprofit works with over 200 organizations across Hawaiʻi to serve communities in the best way that suits their needs. 

Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund

• Donation: $500 
• What do they do: Protect local wildlife
• Mission: Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund is dedicated to the conservation of Hawaiʻi’s wildlife. It  protects native species and habitats, and provides environmental education opportunities for our community members and visitors. 

Travel2Change 

• Donation: $1,000
• What do they do: Sustainable and responsible tourism
• Mission: Travel2change believes that by exploring the world, we can better it. They help travelers discover fun and impactful activities offered by local communities to transform tourism so that local communities benefit.
