When you’re visiting Oahu, shave ice is a must-try! A combination of — you guessed it — shaved ice topped with flavored syrups, it’s a favorite sweet treat here in Hawaii. From healthier options to places with countless flavors, here’s our list of the best places for shave ice in Oahu.

1. Matsumoto Shave Ice

Arguably one of the most famous places for shave ice on the island, Matsumoto’s has over 40 flavors of syrups and a variety of toppings like azuki beans, condensed milk, and ice cream (a local recommendation). With all the shop’s popularity, you can expect a line. But don’t worry, it moves fast.

If you’re looking for a healthier option for shave ice, head to Monsarrat to fulfill your sweet tooth! The eatery uses organic purees (instead of syrups) that deliver a similar taste using less sugar. Not only is this spot healthier, they strategically poke holes in the ice allowing the puree flavors to seep through into every bite.

Waiola Shave Ice in Honolulu has two locations; the original shop on Waiola Street, and another one near Waikiki. This shave ice spot is known for its lengthy menu. From guava to green tea, there’s something for everyone. At Waiola, all the syrups are homemade and it even have some Hawaiian flavors like POG (passion orange guava) and haupia (coconut). We recommend adding some condensed milk on top to take your shave ice to a whole new level. 

4. Shimazu Store

Shimazu Store is known for its serving sizes. Some consider the small to be a large! Stop by for a treat with add-ins such as mochi balls, condensed milk, ice cream, or sweet azuki beans. Keep in mind there is no parking and minimal seating so this is more of a pit stop to enjoy on the go!
