Planning a Hawaiian getaway? The best time to visit really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Craving sunshine and warm days? Prefer fewer crowds? Or maybe there’s a seasonal event you don’t want to miss?

Whatever your ideal vacation looks like, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to help you pick the perfect time to go.

When’s the Best Weather in Hawaii?

Unlike most of the mainland, Hawaii has basically two main seasons: hot, humid summers and mild, wet winters.

Island summers run from May to October. If you love hot, sunny weather, this is the time of year for you!

Temperatures are warm and toasty, sitting around 85 degrees during the day and cooling down to the 70s at night.

With kids out of school and beaches beckoning, it’s no wonder that summer is one of the most popular times to visit Hawaii!

Hawaii’s winters run from November to April with slightly cooler temperatures in the mid to high 70s. Nighttimes can get a bit chillier–dipping down into the high 60s.

This time of year can also include windy days and lots of rain—especially on the windward side of the islands.

So while you won’t need a heavy coat to visit Hawaii in the winter, you might want to pack a light jacket for rainy days or chilly evenings.

Even in the winter, the weather can differ from one side of the island to the other.

So, if it’s raining where you are, chances are it’s sunny somewhere else.

Crowds and Travel Costs

If you’re hoping to avoid crowds and save on airfare and lodging, you’ll want to visit outside of the peak tourist seasons.

Peak Hawaii travel seasons are around the winter holidays from late November to early January, the summer vacation months from June to August, and the spring break months of March or April.

There tend to be fewer visitors from October to November. And some of the lowest airfares run from late January to early March—just about the time you’re ready to ditch that snow for some sun and sand!

When is the Best Time to Surf and Swim in Hawaii?

If swimming and snorkeling are on your vacation bucket list, then you’ll definitely want to plan your visit during the summer.

That’s when the ocean is calmer and most beaches are safe for swimming.

To beat the heat and the crowds during the peak summer season, plan to head to the beach early in the day or later in the evening.

You’ll also be more likely to snag a coveted parking spot!

On the other hand, if you love to surf or enjoy watching experts ride the waves, then winter is a great choice.

This is the time of year when swells peak and professional surfers seek out Hawaii’s world-class waves.

In fact, there are several surf competitions that happen during the winter season!

However, winter is not so great for swimming or snorkeling. Large swells and strong currents from November to March mean that swimming can be dangerous at certain beaches.

No matter what time of year you visit, it’s always a good idea to check surf conditions and follow all safety precautions posted at the beaches.

When’s the Best Time for Whale Watching in Hawaii?

Tourists aren’t the only visitors to the islands. Humpbacks and other whales journey to these warm island waters each year to breed and birth their babies.

You can spot these gentle giants by land or boat on each of the islands during the winter season.

Whales visit the Hawaiian seas in their highest concentration from January to March, but you might get lucky and see them from November to April.
