When we think about a beach, we usually assume that they have been around for a long time. Kehena Beach, on the other hand, was only created during the 1955 lava flow, some 60 years ago - a relatively young beach with stunningly beautiful black sand. Although the sand here may look so remarkably beautiful, show your respect and don’t take any of that sand or rock with you. Remember to always respect the environment - especially this one.

From the parking area, it takes about 10 minutes to hike down to the beach. Because the path is steep and rocky, I only recommend you go if you are wearing shoes suitable for walking. Also, think twice if you have young children, because the path might be a little dangerous for them. It wasn’t always this difficult to get to Kehena beach though. But a major earthquake here, some 20 years ago lowered the entire beach by 3 feet, and destroyed the stairs to the beach that were here. Since then, this beach has been somewhat difficult to get to.

But some people like the seclusion. In fact, Kehena Beach is considered a clothing optional beach. It very much lives up to Puna’s reputation for ‘alternative’ living and open mindset.  Of course if you don’t want to join the nude sunbathers, Kehena is still a great place to sit around, watch waves, and meet some friendly locals in this... how do you say... carefree atmosphere. And if you visit on a Sunday, there is usually a drum circle.
