Hurling Flaming Spears Off Makana Mountain - Hawaiian Fireworks

Shaka Guide

If you think life in ancient Hawaii must have been boring, well you might want to think again! Did you know that during times of celebration, Hawaiians had fireworks? Well, sort of. But it’s very close. So when it’s time for a fireworks show, several strong and brave men were chosen from the village to climb a nearby mountain peak with spear-like shafts of wood called firebrands. When they were ready, with crowds looking on from the beach and in the dark of night, these men would light these firebrands and throw them like javelins from the cliff onto the beach, leaving a trail of fire in the night air. Wow, just imagine that, it must have looked pretty cool!

If you see a tall, sharp mountain right next to the Limahuli gardens parking lot, this is the Makana Mountain, where some Hawaiians to this day still throw this ancient form of fireworks from its cliff.
