Waikoloa all started back in the 1960s, when 35,000 acres of land were purchased - with plans to build golf courses, shopping facilities, condominiums, and 2 hotels. Construction began in the 1980s, transforming the lava fields into a tropical haven, with hundreds of palm trees being flown in by helicopter from the east side of Hawaii.
Today, Waikoloa is a stunning resort district that attracts guests from all over the world. It features some of the best shopping on the island, with two shopping centers, and a beautiful crescent shaped beach with salt and pepper sand and rows of palm trees. It’s a great place to watch Kona’s epic sunsets.
Once you reach the fields, there are several signs explaining the background of the petroglyphs and describing the different kinds of lava, caves, and wind shelters that all exist in this small area of historical relics. When you go, remember to respect the ancient artifacts, and do not engrave your own petroglyphs. This is considered vandalism. You’ll see that other people have already done it, adding modern words and symbols to the etchings-what a shame.
These places are a valuable piece of Hawaiian culture, as well as a wonderful educational experience that was thankfully protected from destruction during the development of hotels, bungalows, and golf courses surrounding it.
