The Scenic Hawaiian Roller Coaster: The Road to Hana

Shaka Guide

Listen to audio sample:

We all know that the Road to Hana has many curves. But do you know how many curves exactly? Let’s make a quick guess. I’ll give you 3 options - over 200, over 400, or over 600 curves.

What’s your guess? If you guessed more than 600 curves, you are pretty darn close! In fact, there are 620 curves in the road today!

So, don’t be surprised if your Shaka Guide Classic Road to Hana Driving Tour kinda feels like you are taking a roller coaster ride!

One tip to have a better experience driving: try to avoid driving behind another car. This allows you to focus more on the beautiful scenery that surrounds you, instead of the bumper of the car in front of you. So just pull over for a bit if you are following another car. Also, when you see a fast car, it’s likely a local resident. Do them a favor and pull over and let them pass. They do this drive every day, and prefer to drive faster than most visitors.

In addition to all the turns and curves, there are 59 bridges - 46 of which are only one-lane bridges. Now, if you are not used to driving one-lane bridges, there is a certain etiquette that you need to know. It’s like a stop sign - whoever comes to the bridge first, can go first. But if you are ever unsure whose turn it is, just roll down your window and wave at the other car to cross, no rush… just hang loose, brah!

Soon enough, you may not notice it, but you’ll be officially into the curvy part of the Road to Hana. Hang tight to the steering wheel, and take the turns slow. Take the time to enjoy this Hawaiian roller coaster ride!
