Beaches on Shaka Guide's East Oahu Shoreline Drive

Jennifer Fields

When people think of Oahu beaches they typically think of Waikiki or the North Shore, however the island’s east coast has some of the best beaches in the country. From bustling Waikiki to historic Hanauma Bay, here are five beaches that you can visit on Shaka Guide’s East Oahu Shoreline Drive.

1. Waikiki Beach

OK, so this isn’t technically a stop on the tour, however, you start and end your Shaka Guide journey in Waikiki. Dotted with beachgoers from all over the globe, this iconic spot stretches two miles along Oahu’s southern shore. We recommend ending your day with a Waikiki sunset -- they’re some of the best you’ll see!

2. Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is a spectacular white-sand beach surrounded by lush green cliffs. Formed from a series of volcanic eruptions, the bay is now home to over 450 varieties of marine life. Spend hours snorkeling with the creatures that call this beach home. Please note, that reservations are now required to enter the bay. You can make a reservation here.

3. Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is a favorite for local surfers and bodyboarders because of its famous shore break. Watch these adventurous souls test their skills against the waves! We’d caution you against swimming -- the powerful swells and strong currents are not ideal for a leisurely dip.

4. Waimanalo Beach

Stroll along three miles of white sand with turquoise water and ironwood trees by your side at Waimanalo Beach. This quiet spot is removed from the crowds and the waves are just big enough to surf, without being too large to swim. Perfect if you’re looking to relax in the sun or play in the ocean.

5. Kailua Beach

This beach is so good, it was actually named 2019’s “Best Beach in America” by Dr. Beach. This spot has three impressive miles of soft, white sand and immaculate water. The waves are gentle, which makes this spot great for kayaking, paddling, and stand-up paddleboarding. You might even spot some windsurfers! If you’re interested in trying out a water sport yourself, you can rent gear in Kailua Town. If not, spend some time relaxing in the sand while embracing the beauty of this beach.

When you're in Hawaii remember that the beaches and marine life are fragile. Please show your aloha by wearing reef-safe sunscreen, respecting the animals - don't get too close or touch them EVER - and by leaving the beach better than you found it.
